The alternator produces electricity while the engine is running. That electricity recharges the battery. The warning means that the battery isn't charging for whatever reason (bad alternator, cables, battery, etc.). A shop can test the alternator and battery if the light remains on when driving.

Hi goalk33. :D akirby gives you a good descriptions and advice. Since you provide little information as to exactly what "playing around in my fusion" entailed (and you seem to be new at automotive mechanics), I will ask a few questions to try and narrow things down: Was the engine running when the warning light illuminated, or were you sitting in the car with the engine off and key turned to the on position? Also, did this happen once, or has the light remained on while driving since then? If the engine was running and the warning light was on, then you should bring your car in ASAP for service. However, if you were sitting in the car with the engine off and key turned to the on position, the charging system light being illuminated is normal. Also, you should really read over the information contained in your Owners Manual concerning the warning lights, what they mean, and what to do if they illuminate. It would help immensely towards your understanding of how your car operates. There is also a lot of other very important and helpful information in the Manual. Post back with the answers to all of the above questions, and good luck. :beerchug:
DaveM
You didn't say what year or if it was under warranty or not. You really didn't say much of anything that was useful in figuring out what is wrong. If it is under warranty I'd take it straight to the dealers and tell them exactly what you were doing and the message that was displayed. Also have you tried the same thing again to see if you can duplicate what happened before? If you can that would be a big help to the service writter.

You won't find a lot of mods for this car as it is more for families than the Mustang is.

Re-read post #2 in this thread. You have to start the motor to make electricity.

Sorry, I wasn't clear enough. You have to have the engine running to make electricity. Not just starting it.
bbf2530
ya but the light don't stay on when im driving its just on when i turn the key over before starting the car.... Hi frogger. :D As akirby, rpreuss and I have alluded to in our prior replies to the OP, what your car is doing is normal. The "Check Charging System" light (and others in the instrument cluster) will briefly illuminate when you first turn the key to the "On" position. That is part of the "Systems Check" the vehicle performs before starting. Then the lights should go out once the car is started. If you sit there with the ignition in the "On" position, but do not start the car, the "Check Charging System" light will stay on until you start the car. If the light illuminates while driving, that would be a problem. I am relatively sure that this information (what the lights mean, when they should be on during a "Systems Check", when having one illuminated means there may be a problem, etc.), plus a lot of other important facts and owner adjustable features, is all explained in the Owners Manual. Good luck. :beerchug: Edited September 27, 2010 by bbf2530
