Dead Battery after only 3 weeks...

I just bought my 2010 Ford Fusion Sport about 3 weeks ago. I went on a trip and left the car in my garage for a week or so and I came back and the battery totally dead! How is this even possible..and its a brand new car. I drove it around a lot and such before my trip. It was very sad having my friend with his 95 car jump start my new 2010 car. After the jump it was fine and im taking it in to ford friday..but wanted to know if anyone had this happen to them or reasons for this. and yes everything was off.

Batteries can just flat out be defective. At my shop I have seen probably a half dozen new batteries end up not being good in the last couple of years. I have been on our parts manager to change distributors but they have been so awesome with warranties that we have decided to keep using them. I won't name the distibutor but the battery brand is a Deka. I am not all that impressed with them.

I have always found that the heavier the battery (more lead plates) the better the battery and the longer it will last and with weight of a car the enemy of manufacturers now that they will go with the lightest/cheapest battery they can find.

Many batteries thought to be bad are merely discharged. To know for sure, they should be fully charged and load tested. The testers today are much better than 15 years ago, but I still would like to see how they load test with a full charge.

 

If a battery has an open circuti, it will not do anything. If plates are shorted out, the reserve capacity will be spent fairly rapidly and the battery should be replaced. If it is merely discharged, look at the charging system and grounds as a possible cause, then start looking for key off electrical draw - relay stuck, light on, etc. :banghead:

My car was made in May and the battery failed two days after I bought it in August. Failed load test. Red marker in "sight glass". When I check voltage across the terminals on a ICE car I usually see 14-14.5 with the engine running. On the hybrid with the ICE running I get 13. Is this correct?

I don't know, but it makes sense that they could regulate the charge voltage down a bit, since the ICE starts off the Hybrid battery pack. :shift:

I just had the battery replaced in my Sport with 4500k miles. First problems I had were intermittenent abilty to start and weird sync/computer glitches. When I brought it in for service the reloaded the system software. A few days laters problems started happening again. Everytime I got into my car my climate sytem would be reset to default(off and when you turn it on driver and passenger sides set at 75). Then the other day I parked at my garage in midtown and when the attendants went to move it it was dead. I went back over and we jumped it and it was good to go. With that happening I scheduled another appointment at the dealer. This time they found that there was a bad cell in the battery that would neither hold nor accept a charge. They replaced the battery and I'm as good as new again. The bad cell in the battery was causing the computer to glitch and at times the remaining cells would trickle low and cause starting problems. I hope this is behind me now for good. Love the car though.

Am I right in thinking you bought the car, parked it for a while, never really drove it and then had the battery go dead? Chances are nothing is wrong with the battery, but that after sitting for a while, not being driven, having people getting in and out, trying things out, not really giving the battery a chance to fully charge, I can see this happening. It takes several hours of charging to bring a battery up to full charge after being depleted. I have a pair of Optima batteries in my F350 Diesel, and if I let it sit for a few weeks, I need to put a charger on them to keep them topped off. Even sitting when turned off, there are things in the car still drawing power off the battery, like the PCM, Radio, and any other computer that needs a keepalive. After a few weeks, they are down to 60%.

[i left something on my passenger seat and everytime I went to start my car the next day my battery was dead. As soon as I took the weight off my front seat the car started the next day normally. I was wondering If this is a design defect that leaves the seat sensor draining juice even with the car off.
