Ford as an Investment

I checked back and if you had invested $1,000 in Ford stock Jan. 1, 2009, it would be worth $8,950 today. As a comparison, a $1,000 investment in Toyota is worth $1,200 over the same time period. I feel like there is a lot more value still in Ford stock. They will be releasing more shares (I hear) so it may never get back to $36 a share, but $16 -$20 is clearly doable within 3 years.

 

I just wish my foresight was as good as my hindsight - I would have mortgaged the farm.

If anything, I think buying 100 shares of Ford stock isn't a bad idea depending on whether you might want to buy a hot new Ford product in the future at x-plan pricing. On normal vehicles, you can usually negotiate a price better than x-plan, but Ford always releases hot little vehicles from time to time with limited production.

 

As for me, I bought some shares back at $6.89 a share, squirmed as Ford stock hit rock bottom into penny stock territory, and now am relieved that it has recovered. I really hope they don't dilute the current shares, but I hear GM wants to do the same thing.

Good point, I forgot to mention the x-plan for stockholders. No matter how good a negotiator you are, you can't beat true x-plan 99% of the time. Ford provides a refund to dealers if they honor the x-plan deal (it is optional for a dealer to accept x-plan). Plus, they limit the extra charges the dealer can put on the deal, on top of giving the x-plan buyer any extra incentives that might not be available to retail buyers (dealer cash, etc.) You will get to see the actual invoices with x-plan pricing.

 

Once you are a stockholder, you call stockholder relations, ask for a PIN and tell your dealer up front that you are x-plan eligible. Your savings might pay for your stock.

The only caveat is that you have to provide proof that you have owned at least 100 shares for a minimum of 6 months in order to qualify. Still not a bad deal considering how much you will save to begin with on hot vehicles. I was able to buy my hybrid this way at x-plan pricing as dealers were still not selling for below sticker when I ordered mine.
