Rancherlee@hotmail.com
I just got my Fusion SE as a rental return with 47,000 miles on it. I love how it drives, handles, and shifts. ONE thing I've noticed is how long it takes for the converter to finally lock up. I drive 14 miles each way to work and the converter doesn't lockup until I'm over 1/2 way to work which I find odd. My 02' Mountaineer locks the converter at highway speeds just after the first set of stop lights only 1 mile, slightly up hill, from my house. Granted it has been hovering around 0*f but I'm wondering if this is normal or not for an 2.5L Fusion. Usually the converter doesn't lock until after the last set of stop lights which is almost 8 miles from my house.
xmech2k
How can you tell when the converter locks?
drolds1
How can you tell when the converter locks? I'll be interested to hear the answer as well. Today's lockup TCs are so smooth, you can't really feel them lock up. You might be able to watch the tachometer and catch it, but you might also crash into something while doing that.
Blue 11 Fusion
Watching the tach is the only good way to tell... Unless the radio isnt on... To the O.P. My 2011 with the 4 cylinder auto takes forever to warm up... Let alone lock the torque converter... And my mileage shows it...

My 2011 with the 4 cylinder auto takes forever to warm up... Let alone lock the torque converter... And my mileage shows it... Exactly, watch the tach. On level ground it runs about 2000-2200 rpm until the converter locks up @ 60mph. Once locked the RPMs drop to ~1700rpm @ 60mph. It does seem to effect the fuel economy too, it quickly drops to a 24.0mpg average (I reset it every tank) and as soon as it locks it will climb back up to 24.4mpg right before I turn it off at work. Same on the way home too. I'm not really going to complain too much though, 24mpg average is better than the 13mpg average off my old 93' Explorer I just parked and it IS the middle of winter. Maybe I'll get an SCT tuner for this car too, if nothing else but to tweak the transmission settings myself and make the converter lockup sooner. I like to feel the shifts a bit and firmer shifts = Longer lasting tranny, Just not as firm as my T-bird as that gets rubber on the 2-3 shift at 90mph! I wish mine had firmer shifts because at wot there seems to be no firmer shifts than if I were driving normally... I also wouldnt mind a little better mileage becuase I am averaging about 22 right now and that is driving easy... It just has given me the feeling since day one that the light shifts was going to kill the life of the transmission.
Ihatemyfordfusion11
I have a 2011 Ford Fusion SE. I have had nothing but problems since it came home from the Dealeship. The transmission slips while shifting, as well as a very hard shift. When the car is first started, the start is hard, followed by a loud annoying ticking noise that will not go away. I also have problems with the brakes, passenger side airbag light randomly goes off, and a 2 page list with problems. I have been to the dealer once already to be told that there is nothing wrong. I have spoken with an Allen in Ford's Customer Team who now for 3 days has not returned one phone call. I was supposed to take it back to the dealer but now have no confirmation of an appointment and Ford to put out the bill for the rental. I will have to make my own appt and now put out the money for the rental car. Thank you Ford for bringing me a new headache and what a way to treat a new Ford owner. I will not recommend Ford to anyone I know and amazed how they will not take ownership of the problems being brought to them. Found on Road Dead - FORD lives up to their reputation.

I had some issues when I purchased my 2010. Solution: Write some letters. Stress that what has happened to you is just bad business for Ford. Worked like a charm for me.
